Obituary for Edith P. "Edie" Smith (Stoner)

MIFFLINTOWN, Edith P. “Edie” Smith, 83, of R.R. #4, Mifflintown, died at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at the Lewistown Hospital.
Born on September 20, 1925, in Fermanagh Twp., Juniata Co., she is a daughter of the late Herbert L. and Carrie (Bergey) Stoner. Her husband, George R. “Dick” Smith, whom she married on March 11, 1950, survives.
Surviving are: one daughter, Sharon K. Kepner and her husband Dave, of R.R. #5, Mifflintown, one son, Randy C. Smith, of Mifflintown, one brother, William Stoner, of R.R. #4, Mifflintown and she leaves behind one grandson, Ronald Horne, Jr., three step grandchildren, Julie Colyer, Jill Kerstetter, Corey Kepner, nine step great-grandchildren an d one great-great-step grandson.
Three sisters, Mary Yocum, Ellen E. King and Bessie Dolin and eight brothers, Leon Stoner, Elmer Stoner, John Stoner, James Stoner, Herbert Stoner, Cloyd Stoner and twin brothers Robert and Albert, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, where she and her husband volunteered their time to the Visitation Ministry, which visited the homebound members of the church.
Edith was a 1945 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown.
In earlier life, she served as a seamstress at the Mifflin sewing factory, before working at L. Shellenberger Shirt factory, in McAlisterville. Later, she was employed by Arrow Shirt Factory, of Lewistown, after which she worked at Fisher Electronics, Milroy and Barrows Enterprises, Inc., Mifflintown.
“Edie” loved reading, the outdoors and traveling. Her love of travel was embodied in the fact that she visited all 48 contiguous states and Canada.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2008, from the Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, R.R. #4, Mifflintown with the Rev. Steven D. Munger and the Rev. M. Eugene Heidler officiating. Interment will follow in the Union Memorial Gardens, R.R. #4, Mifflintown.
Viewing will be held from 7 - 9 p.m., Sunday, October 12, 2008 at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
