MIFFLINTOWN, Dr. Samuel D. Zeiders, Jr., 84, of Palm Harbor, FL and formerly of Mifflintown, died at 9:47 a.m., on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at the Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown.
Born March 5, 1926, in Mifflintown, Juniata County, he was a son of the late S. David and Stella D. (Deckard) Zeiders, Sr. On August 30, 1952, he wed Dorothy F. (Farnsworth) Zeiders, with whom he shared more than 58 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, also surviving are his children, Donna J. Lauver and her husband Barry, of Mansfield, Samuel D. Zeiders III and his wife Joanne, of Camden, NY, Thomas E. Zeiders and his wife Carol, of Sewell, NJ, Paul Zeiders, of Mifflintown and he leaves behind ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
One sister, Mary Martha Radle, preceded him in death, making him the last of his immediate family.
Sam was a 1944 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown, a U. S. Naval Veteran of WW II, after which he graduated from Penn State University, and later from the Temple University Dental School.
Dr. Zeiders practiced Dentistry in Juniata County for more than 31 years, retiring in 1983.
His memberships included, the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, where he had served as the president of the church council and sang in the church choir, an associate member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Tarpon Springs, FL. He was also a member and past president of the Mifflintown Lions Club, member and past master of the Union Lodge #324, F & A. M., Mifflintown, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Juniata Forrest #88. Dr. Zeiders spent countless hours volunteering for many civic functions. Those most notable would be, the Mifflin-Juniata United Way and the Juniata Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America, where for many years he served as a table host for the annual Good Scout Dinner and since it’s inception, was instrumental in organizing the annual golf tournament for the Boy Scouts.
Sam will long be remembered as an accomplished amateur golfer, having won, at different times, the club championships at Lost Creek Golf Club, Oakland Mills, the Lewistown Country Club, Lewistown and the Innisbrook Country Club, Palm Harbor, FL. He also enjoyed hunting and reading; however, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 2010, from the Messiah Lutheran Church, corner of Washington Ave. and Third Sts., Mifflintown with Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment will follow in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.
Viewing will be held from 6 - 8 p.m. Monday, December 20, 2010, at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with Masonic services accorded at 7:45 p.m. There will be no viewing at the church.
