Ft. Lauderdale Snapper

I met Spud in 1961. I had just turned 10yrs old and my parents moved us from Media, Pa. to Ft. Lauderdale for a better climate since my brother couldnt shake pneumonia. I just started playing baseball in little league and was making new friends. The Yankees trained there and here is the story. My grandmother Emma Gillespie, we called her nana came to visit us from Media and asked me if I remember Mrs. Murray the lady I babysat for because I took you several times with me. I did remember her but the not the child she watched. She said that Spud Murray was her son and hes down here in Ft Lauderdale with the Yankees training. She said that he had some time and would like me to take him fishing. Of course I said yes ! He came over and I took him to the intercostal fishing and darn if he did catch a good size snapper. Long story we took it home and mom cooked it up for him. In turn, I got to meet the stars that year 1961. Watched the practice session that day and got a ball signed by the starting line up. What a story a 10 year old had. Spud, at that time was the nicest grown up I ever met and he was always in my memories. Tom Gillespie
