Obituary for Blanche E. Schlegel (Bashore)

Blanche Elizabeth Schlegel, of Glendale, passed away peacefully at 8:40 p.m., on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at her home.

Blanche was married to Wayne Schlegel with whom she was blessed to share 68 years of marriage. Born on June 23, 1933 in Fayette Twp., Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Roswell and Laura Bashore.

Blanche is survived by her husband Wayne and her four children, Wanda (Larry) Sheaffer of Glendale, Debra Schlegel of Ephrata , Lori (Doug) Tyger of York, and Jeff (Lori) Schlegel of Glendale; Ten grandchildren, Ryan (Betsey) Sheaffer of Glendale, Lauren Sheaffer (James Reifler) of Los Angeles, Grant Sheaffer of Mifflintown, Megan (Andy) Tokarchek of Bechtelsville, Jared (Katrina) Sheaffer of Littleton CO, Drew (Jamie) Tyger of Bozeman, MT, Ross Tyger of Harrisburg, Ian Tyger of The Hague, Lindsey (Travis) Howard of Glendale; Dwayne Schlegel of Glendale; four great grandchildren, Brayden and Noah Howard, and Ellie and Wyatt Sheaffer. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Bashore Landis and a brother, Ralph Bashore.

Blanche was an owner/operator of Schlegel’s Groceries and Hardware for most of her life. She began in the store business at Kipp’s Meat Market at age 14. Blanche and Wayne joined his father’s business and eventually took over the business. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in East Salem.

Blanche was passionate about sports, first as an athlete. She participated in softball and track and field in her early years. As an adult, she and Wayne played local volleyball and then walleyball at Ridgeside Courts. Blanche became an avid sports fan and favored the Duke Blue Devils, Serena and Venus Williams, and Roger Federer. Collegiate or Professional teams were viewed with astute statistical recall. She supported her children’s teams and always was in the stands no matter the time and place.

Graveside Services will be held for immediate family with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
