Obituary for Wayne Wesley Goodling



Wayne Wesley Goodling, 98, a resident of McAlisterville since 1947, passed away at 5:30 AM on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at the Locust Grove Retirement Village in Mifflin.
He is survived by his three children, Robert W. Goodling of Rochester, NY; Carol (Goodling) Guild of Port St. Joe, FL; and Randall L. Goodling of Mechanicsburg; and his three step children, Patricia (Bassler) Aitkins of Lewistown; Kenneth Bassler of New Paris, PA; and Ruth (Bassler) Davis of Kingsley, MI.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mabel Irene (Forry, Bassler) Goodling, their son, Stephen Michael Goodling, and his step son, Clair Bassler.
He is also survived by one grandson, four step grandsons, six step granddaughters, one great grandson, and nineteen step great grandchildren.
He was born in Millerstown, PA on January 8, 1922 to Wesley and Mary Goodling, was raised in Cocolamus, PA and is the last surviving of their seven children. He attended the Cocolamus School, and served in the U.S. Army for four years, from 1942 to 1946 at Camp Carson, Colorado, where he received the American Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
In 1947, he opened the McAlisterville Shoe Repair and Shoe Store, which he owned and ran for 38 years. Upon his retirement in 1985, he said he enjoyed being business for all those years and serving the residents of Juniata County with footwear, shoe repair, and special orthopedic corrections.
He is a member of the Bunkertown Brethren Church where he was a lifetime deacon, Sunday school teacher, sang in the church choir, and served on the church board. He was a member of the Bunkertown Men’s Chorus since 1947. Wayne often said, “I love to sing, especially to use my voice to praise God.”
Mr. Goodling was active in local civic organizations including the Fayette Lions Club. He and his wife enjoyed extensive travel during their retirement years, including trips to the Holy Land in Israel, a 36 state motor trip, travel to Hawaii and Alaska, and spent many winters in Florida.
Funeral Services will be held at the Bunkertown Brethren Church, 52 Bunkertown Road, McAlisterville beginning at 10:00 AM, Friday, January 24, 2020 with Pastor Terry Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Goodwill Cemetery in Bunkertown where military honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veteran’s Council.
A viewing will be held from 4-6 PM on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville and also from 9:30 AM until the time of the funeral services at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Bunkertown Brethren Church.
