Giovanna M. “Jean” Giarratana, 91, of Mifflintown, passed away at 12:15 AM on Monday, August 5, 2019 at her residence.

Born on March 5, 1928 in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, she is a daughter of the late Michael and Lucy (Adamo) Tusa.
On June 25, 1950, she was married to her surviving husband, William “Bill” Giarratana, Jr., with whom she was blessed to share more than 69 years of marriage.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Karen A. Tornambe of Port Royal, Lori A. Hare and her husband David and William Giarratana, III, all of Mifflintown; a child whom they raised, Janet Milewski Esposito and her husband Richard of Greenwich, CT; one sister, RoseMarie Lacognata of Parmuas, NJ; ten grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
A son-in-law, Matthew J. Tornambe preceded her in death.
In 1988 she retired with 30 years of service as a elementary and special education teacher having taught at Edith N. Bogart Elementary School, Upper Saddle River, N.J. and Franklin Elementary School, Franklin, N.J.
Mrs. Giarratana was a member of the St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Mifflintown and a member of the church’s women’s guild. With her love of reading books, she volunteered at the Juniata County Library for 12 years and with her gift of cooking and baking her family always enjoyed everything she had prepared for them when they cherished the time they all spent together.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 from the St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 3918 William Penn Hwy., Mifflintown with the Rev. Father William Weary officiating. Interment will follow at Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown and there will be no viewing at the church on Wednesday.
