Obituary for Shirley E. Zimmerman

MIFFLINTOWN, Shirley E. Zimmerman, 75, of Mifflintown, died at 10:05 p.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the SUN Home Hospice Care Center, Sunbury.

Born on July 9, 1935, in Mifflintown, Juniata County, she is a daughter of the late Leroy and P. Irene (Friese) Fasick. She wed her surviving husband, Banks A. Zimmerman, on January 24, 1953, with whom she shared more than 58 years of marriage.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Margaret I. (Peg) Zimmerman, of Thompsontown, Banks A. Zimmerman, Jr, of Mifflintown, Lou Ann Henry and her husband Bill, of Port Royal, Robert L. “Bo” Zimmerman and his wife Heather, of Mifflintown, three sisters, Dorothy Allwein and her husband Dale, of Mechanicsburg, Jane Paden, of Mifflintown, Sandra Lebkicher, of Port Royal, one brother, Carl M. Fasick and his wife Wilma, of Cocolamus, and she leaves behind 9 grandchildren and one great grandson.

On May 15, 1982, two sisters, Beverly I. Hockenberry and Janet L. Hockenberry, preceded her in death.

Shirley was a member of the Grace Covenant Church, Thompsontown, a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post #5863, a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post #298, both of Mifflintown and team captain of the Fasick Flashers team for the Mifflin-Juniata Relay for Life.

In earlier life, she was employed by Bratton’s Restaurant, of Mifflin. Later, she worked at Juniata Garment, of Mifflin, before co-owning the A & Z Sub Shop, of Mifflintown, and worked until 2000 at Empire Kosher Poultry, Inc., Mifflintown.

Mrs. Zimmerman enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, and traveling to the Atlantic City casinos, and treasured the time she spent with her family at reunions, but her greatest joy was the time she spent with her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Pastor Glen Peachey and Pastor John Foltz officiating. Interment will be in the Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown.

Viewing will be held from 7 - 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at the funeral home.
