Florence V. “Flo” Long, 93, of Mifflintown passed away peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2018 at the home of her daughter.
Born on September 15, 1925 in Beale Twp., Juniata County, she is the daughter of the late Harvey E. and Florence (Henry) Nipple. On September 22, 1945, she married her late husband, Albert J. “Jack” Long with whom she was blessed to share more than 53 years of marriage before his passing on March 8, 1999.
Surviving are: a daughter, Carol Adams and her husband James of Mifflintown; four grandchildren, Jill Baughman, Patricia Siegfried and her husband Phil, Douglas Adams and his wife Heather, Curtis Adams and his wife Kelly; six great-grandchildren, Jacob Baughman, Mason Baughman, Eric Siegfried, Lauren Siegfried, Dylan Adams, Alaina Adams; and one great- great- grandson, Roland Baughman.
In addition to her parents and husband, Flo was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Maxton; a son-in-law, Jesse Maxton; and she was the last of her generation having been preceded in death by a brother, Harold Nipple and a sister, Vera Rhine.
In 1943, she graduated from Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown and was a 50 plus year member of the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia.
Early in her career Flo worked in various clerical positions. She later became a seamstress, working for many years in numerous sewing factories in Juniata County, with the last being at Rae-Sel in Port Royal. After leaving the factories she became a licensed real estate agent and worked with two generations of Long’s Auctioneering, retiring in 1996. While holding down jobs outside the home, she always enjoyed working side by side with her late husband on the family farm doing whatever needed to be done.
Her interests included farming, gardening and canning, sewing and crocheting, and watching Hallmark movies, but most of all taking care of her family over the years. Her greatest joys were from being with family and friends, especially sharing the holiday meals. There was always room for one more at her table. She especially enjoyed any time she could share with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Being a woman of strong faith who had an amazing understanding of how to relate to the trials of life, even in today’s world, she was an admired matriarch and a prayer warrior for her family and friends. She is so often remembered for her kind heart and for the “words of wisdom” she shared with all.
