George A. Colyer, 96, of McAlisterville died at 12:10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at his home.
Born on August 30, 1920, in Fayette Twp., Juniata County, he was the son of the late Cloyd Richard and Margaret L. (Smith) Colyer. On December 30, 1950, he married his late wife, Ruth V. (McNemar) Colyer, with whom he shared more than 38 years of marriage until she preceded him in death on February 12, 1989.
Surviving are his children, Madeline Campbell, Naomi Dressler and her husband Ronald, Roberta Dowling and her husband Charles (Mick), Irene Hockenbroch and he husband Mark, all of McAlisterville; brothers, Cloyd Colyer, Jr. and his wife Betty, of McAlisterville, Roy Colyer and his wife Nancy, of Licking Creek; a brother in law, Hoyle Dunn, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin; a sister in law, Jean Colyer, of Thomsontown; 15 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Debra Dowling, in 1971, a great grandson, Dakota Dowling in 1996 and siblings Esther Billow, Mary Dressler, Anna Mae Weiand, Ruth Colyer, Althea Meiser, Mildred Dunn, William Colyer, Albert Colyer, and Norman Colyer.
George was a member of the Church of the Open Door, Evendale. He loved to hunt and fish, as well as provide transportation for the Amish community. He also read his bible every day, had many stories to tell; however his greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Colyer was a lifelong farmer, who farmed the farm owned by his family since 1790. During WW II he worked for the PA Railroad, Enola and later for H.P. McGinley, McAlisterville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, December 19, 2016 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. George Swartz officiating. Interment will follow in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Thompsontown.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of service at the funeral home.
